They hardly speak the language, don’t know the customs, but vow to be good wives to young men they barely know. The year is 1946. The foreign land is the United States. This was a beautifully filmed BBC miniseries of the famed Mark Twain story, with a terrific cast including John Bowe as the devious Earl of Hertford, Peter Jeffrey (sadly in one of the great actor's last parts) as the kind Duke of Norfolk, James Purefoy as Miles Hendon and Keith Michell reprising the role of King Henry VIII that, of course, he was celebrated for playing in the legendary 1970s series "The Six Wives of Henry VIII". Youngster Philip Sarson played both Prince Edward and Tom Canty, and although he was just a boy he made quite a good job of the roles, especially when you take into consideration some of the distinguished actors with whom he had to share scenes. Perhaps he could have become a fine actor in his own right, but I suspect he has chosen another career path since.
