Three women in a foreign land. They hardly speak the language, don’t know the customs, but vow to be good wives to young men they barely know. The year is 1946. The foreign land is the United States. Jin-woo, a reporter, disappears while covering a war in the Middle East. His friend, Hyeong-jun, marries Jin-woo's widow to take care of their infant daughter. But many yars later Jin-woo returns and demands that his daughter be handed over to his custody. Three women in a foreign land. He also plays marimbas, the traditional Guatemalan instrument. He is used to play a folkloric musical show in one of the fancy hotel of Guatemala City. He faces the population's lack of interest for his instrument, considered like out of date and old fashioned. Black is pioneer of the Heavy Metal Guatemalan underground stage. He also is also a doctor in the public hospital but nobody wants to be treated by him because of his long hair and his tattoos. When Don Alfonso and Black meet each other and decide to combine their talents and create a brand new project called Marimbas from Hell, they could never have imagined all the reactions they would provoke among the population. A cry in the dark explores universal themes of love, loss, grief, healing and redemption through a unique lens. This story takes you on the journey of a young girls inability to cope with a tragic event which leaves her delusional and dangerous. The concept behind this film explores our social construction of the spiritual versus psychological debate. Are some people's convictions that they can see spirits true, or are their visions products of a psychologically fragmented, delusional mind, damaged in some way as others may counter. The director explores this debate and leaves that answer up to the audience to decide for themselves.
