He left behind such memorable movies as Les Disparus de St Agil, La Grande illusion, Têmpete (the last to be shown) and L’Alibi which he made for Pierre Chenal. On his return to France in 1946, he worked for both Jean Boyer and Pierre Chenal in the same year, creating with Chenal a minor masterpiece in La Foire aux chimè(🈹)res, which may be translated as The Fair of Dreams. On being demobbed at the end of the war, Canadian flyer Laurence Gerard returns to France to discover who ordered the killing of a group of Resistence fighters including his new bride. He identifies Vichy collaborator Marcel Jarnac, who is reported as dead himself. Not believing this, Gerard follows the trail to Argentina where it is apparent that Nazism is also far from dead. Monty Crandall is a commercial artist who ridicules a dowager with a caricature of her on a magazine cover and she sues him. His troubles are multiplied when a pretty wife forces her attentions on him, and her gun-toting husband is somewhat incensed about it, blaming Monty. He fakes his death and returns as a ghost to frighten off the trouble-makers, but it is only when he enlists the aid of a real ghost, Eric, that his problems are solved. Helen Brent has just received a Reno divorce. That night, she discovers one of her neighbors, Laury Palmer, and a gentleman caller murdered in their home. The killer is her neighbor's other boyfriend, who won't abide anyone "cutting in" on him. This is Sam Wilde, a man who knows what he wants, is insanely jealous of what he has, and will kill to keep it. Rather than tell the police what she knows, Helen hops a train back to San Francisco... Diijon, a tired magician, gives up his act to study the power of the mind. His wife Victoria, once supportive, now is struggling to pay bills. She urges her stubborn and older husband to return to the magic field where Diijon was considered one of the greats. He refuses but does reluctantly agree to do a hypnotism nightclub act at Victoria's urging. The act goes bad and he's laughed off the stage. He's convinced this is the handiwork of Victoria's ex-lover Tony Holliday. Later, Diijon finds that he does indeed have the power to control men's minds and begins to take revenge on the people he felt made him look like a fool. He hypnotizes his young wife to kill the man.
