Policeman Leon Kramer (Vogel) and his partner Pit (Sö(🕘)zer) are observing two people in a car. When Kramer goes to fetch some coffee the two people in the car and Pit are killed. Suspicion draws on him and very soon his boss is killed too and he becomes a fugitive. He gets to know that one of the two he observed was an ex-RAF-terrorist and the other one his former lawyer. A friend of the lawyer (Berricke) contacts Kramer and gives him information about the RAF and so does the father of the dead terrorist. He gets to know that there's maybe a conspiracy of important people of the government who use terrorist groups for their purpose. And now they want his life...

Alone in the chapel of hope on Christmas Eve Reverend Bernice hates Christmas,since her mother was carried off by Papa Lazarou disguised as Santa Claus when she was a child. She has three visitors. Then an old man who visited Herr Lipp and his wife in 1975 recounts the saga of Lipp's fascination with cute young choirboy Matthew and his belief that Lipp was a vampire. Finally Chinnery comes to unburden himself as to why he is such a bad vet. In Victorian times his great-great-grandfather,the finest vet in England,came to Royston Vasey but was tricked into touching the wrong monkey's testicle,as a result of which all succeeding vets in the family have been cursed. Bernice feels happier after consoling Chinnery but she is unaware that history is about to repeat itself.
Having recovered from his wounds Andy Dalziel returns to the fold just as Peter Pascoe is in the midst of an undercover operation trying to capture a serial killer. Peter corners the man who then jumps to his death but the only witness turns out to be Abbie Hallingsworth who was kidnapped 19 years before and presumed dead. More difficult however is that her kidnapper, Gus Mullavey, confessed to her murder and is still in prison, though now on his deathbed. Dalziel has a great deal of difficulty in accepting the situation and Abbie's family has mixed feelings about her return, especially one of her two brothers who is simply not prepared to accept her claim. DNA testing confirms her identity but the police soon have a murder investigation on their hands when Abbie is found dead.
