During WW II, one of the hits of the London stage is a play about a murderer who strangles his victims. The actor who plays the strangler identifies so strongly with his part that when he receives a blow to the head during a bombing raid, he believes that he actually is the strangler. Helen Brent has just received a Reno divorce. That night, she discovers one of her neighbors, Laury Palmer, and a gentleman caller murdered in their home. The killer is her neighbor's other boyfriend, who won't abide anyone "cutting in" on him. He kills a man in a fight, and flees to New Zealand. William deserts inadvertently from the navy, and also flees in disgrace to New Zealand, where he and Timothy start a profitable business. One night, drunk, William writes Octavius, demanding his daughter's hand; but, being drunk, he asks for the wrong sister. Celestine, the chambermaid, has a new job in the country, at the Lanlaires. When a nagging wife commits suicide, her husband is threatened with a murder frame by his lawyer, unless he kills a certain female reporter for him. Monty Crandall is a commercial artist who ridicules a dowager with a caricature of her on a magazine cover and she sues him. His troubles are multiplied when a pretty wife forces her attentions on him, and her gun-toting husband is somewhat incensed about it, blaming Monty. He fakes his death and returns as a ghost to frighten off the trouble-makers, but it is only when he enlists the aid of a real ghost, Eric, that his problems are solved.
