Alia had fled the palace ten years earlier, at which time she spent burying tortured memories of her childhood. In her visit to pay respects for the death of the prince, Alia wanders through the largely abandoned palace where she is confronted by these memories represented as detailed flashbacks of her childhood. She begins to piece together a narrative about her mother's sexuality and sexual exploitation in a space ordered by gender and class difference, and is re-awakened to her persistent questioning about her father's identity. As Alia negotiates her past, she also deals with her current relationship to her lover, Lotfi, who has asked her to have what seems to be yet another abortion. Meanwhile transvestite David Martin is released once again from prison - he's provocative and aggressive, escaped from prison twice. When he's caught again during a burglary, he shoots one of the police officers. Until 1983 he advances to the most wanted criminal in UK. After a chase through half of London, a suspect is shot by police officer Finn - an innocent, as it turns out, so Finn is suspended. The case becomes a police scandal, when he's even accused of murder. Jasper is the perfect English Civil Servant - polite and refined. But to his girl friend, and even to himself, he is a bore. So he decides to become a painter in Paris. Not so fast. The powers-that-be send him to the country to dismantle a forgotten research unit which is headquartered in an old mansion. The eccentric owner lives in a railway train, on his own 'branch line', letting the government pay for the upkeep of his ancestral home. The small research unit enjoys running the stately home and everyone is content with the status quo. Enter Jasper who quickly meets Lord Flamborough's three daughters, who, in one way or another contrive to make Jasper feel very much at home.
