Joe Novak is a test pilot for military-aircraft designer Sam Bentley, who thinks of Joe as a son. A competing plane company is seeking the same Army contract as Bentley, and offers a $500 bonus to their publicity woman Marge Stevens if she can entice Joe into quitting Bentley to join their company. When Joe takes repeated unnecessary risks in the air, Bentley fires him and Joe goes to work for the competitor. He almost loses his life when the inferior plane he is testing fails to function at a high altitude, a fault that the designer had anticipated but had let get by because of his greed in getting the contract. Before an investigation board, Joe's new employer falsely swears that Joe had disobeyed orders, and Joe is officially grounded. Joe and a friend "kidnap" the test pilot Bentley has hired to replace Joe, and Joe makes a successful flight. The Army accepts the Bentley plane and Joe has his license restored. A Bank officer discovers a flaw in the U.S. extradition treaty with Brazil and decides to take advantage of it. On Friday, he steals a million dollars from the bank, knowing it won't be missed until the bank opens on the following Monday. He and his wife, who doesn't know what he has done, then take a flight to Brazil. After some difficulties, they get as far as New Orleans, where his wife discovers the reason for their flight and what he has done. She leaves him and returns home. He is now alone with his conscience, and doesn't know if he can get back and return the money to the bank's vault before the start of business on Monday Diogè(📴)ne Leguignon is a modest railway worker for whom things seldom tend to go right.Having been expelled from his home, he and his wife are forced into a rundown house in a less desirable part of town. Unknown to Leguignon, a band of local children have discovered a stash of treasure and keep it concealed under the floorboards in his house. When Leguignon attempts to claim ownership of the treasure, he ends up in court and is branded a thief. When he is released from jail, he persuades his neighbours to use the money gained from the sale of the treasure to build a new housing estate. But to raise the extra capital to complete the project, Leguignon has to turn to some very unscrupulous bankers... A group of men of differing circumstances and personalities gather at a monastery to undergo a course of spiritual reappraisal. They comprise of a candle-maker, a politician, an ex-prisoner, a novelist and a petty thief trying to elude the police. All have their own spiritual problems to solve, except the thief. The politician, a former partisan leader, suffers the remorse of causing the deaths of three innocent men on a sabotage mission; he is set for the priesthood. The prisoner, a sick and possibly dying man, lacks the courage to visit his wife who is now happily remarried; his padre has advised him to leave her alone. The novelist bears the moral responsibility for offences committed by young people led astray by his writings; he earns a lot for his work, but is too demoralized to continue.
