After an accident Lilly grows up alone with her father and his friend in a town in Germany and without a mother. When she first discovers sexuality she went pregnant. Her father is going to jail after killing the suspected boyfriend, his friend travels with Lilly to the Netherlands. But because he himself had an affair with Lilly the father went after them... Tomek is 14 and a good student. He's interested in astronomy and plays football to please his father. The only thing is, he lives in a poor little border town plagued by unemployment, whereas across the river lies Germany with all its relative affluence. Tomek meets Marta at a disco and falls in love with her. He starts to think up ways of earning money in order to keep her interested. He approaches a pimp who seeks out local boys for his German clients. Tomek has no idea of the brutal fate which awaits him. An ex agent of the FBI and Interpol (Tony Lo Bianco) is expelled by the CIA and he starts a detective agency in Genoa, great Italian city. Here he is known as 'The American', despite his origins are Sicilian. Dr. Mayer entrusts him to investigate on the sequestration and murder of the shipowner Mayer, as well as of the recovery of a million of Liras poured for the not happened liberation of the dead one. 'The American' has to overcome a double barrier: commissioner Lo Bianco that fears the illegal methods and a violent gang headed by the gangster called 'The French'. 'The American' gets the friendship of Lo Bianco after manifold mishaps, showing to be still an excellent police officer. In the middle of the seventies Italy lived its darker season, because victim of the terrorism. Those were the so-called 'Anni di Piombo' (Leaden Years), so many Italian films reflect the fear that could be read in the eyes of Italians. This rare crime-cop movie is an explicit example of that climate. Excellent O.S.T. by Franco Micalizzi. He's on less than good terms as well with his brother Peter who feels that Tommy abandoned him when their father died. When Mick Cambrey is found dead in his shop in the village, the police arrest his father-in-law John Penellin, the Lynleys long-time estate manager. Lynley and Haver soon determine that the death is related to drug smuggling. When one of the weekend guests, Justin Brooke, is found dead on the estate, they realize something other than heroin was being smuggled. This Italian produced, NYC lensed heist picture is actually quite entertaining with a few nice twists. Retired safe cracker Chris Gretchko (Lee Van Cleef) is lured to a job by the son (Edward Albert) of an ex-buddy. He flies to NYC and finds out he will be lifting $1 million in diamonds for a shady German group. It all goes smoothly until he learns that the group has plans to kill the second he has the safe open. Directed by Antonio Margheriti (as Anthony Dawson), this flick benefits from a clever script, great performances and evocative locations in New York. Van Cleef is his usual gruff self and he plays most scenes off Albert or hippie chick/life saver Karen Black. Lionel Stander appears as Gretchko's old-time fence. Supporting roles include Peter Carsten as the German mob boss, Ron Van Clief as some karate chopping muscle and soon to be character actor Roy Brocksmith (the bald, fat guy from TOTAL RECALL) as the guy who gets ripped off. "Free Hand for the Tough Cop" is another wildly exiting, gritty and remarkably plotted 70's Euro-Cult cinema highlight, with a structure that is delightfully convoluted, wicked dialogs & action situations that rank amongst Italy's finest! Personally, I would even state this film is as good as on par with the quality levels of Lenzi's most famous crime-thrillers, like "Almost Human" and "Violent Naples", but it's not as easily available as those two and therefore still a little under-appreciated. With the revival of European cult cinema lately, this film is destined to be released in a fancy DVD-edition any time soon, and I'm sure it'll get many new fans from that moment on. For those who can't wait for an English and/or internationally released version; the film is already available on a French label called Neo Publishing. The picture quality and sound are awesome, and the disc contains some fascinating extras, but you have to able to understand either the French or the Italian language.
