Des is an eleven year old kid who has had a really bad deal in life. Crime and mischief are the main staples of his life and he and his friends cruise around the city and do things like vandalize, steal, light fires, and mug people. He thinks that he is untouchable because he cannot be charged until he is twelve. Cory becomes Des' best friend and they carry on like nothing can stop them; however, Des ends up at an assessment centre for troubled youths and may begin a new life without crime.
Set in the 1950s, Rough Magic tells the story of what happens when a pretty apprentice magician goes to Mexico to escape her fiancé, a wealthy politician, and to find a Mayan shaman who will teach her ancient principles of magic. She is being trailed by a detective hired by her fiancé(🌗). He's a former photojournalist traumatized by what he saw in Hiroshima. The photojournalist joins her in the search for the Mayan shaman, and falls in love with her; the feeling is not reciprocated. When she finds the shaman, she drinks a potion which empowers her to do magic. The potion has life-changing effects on her and her relationship with her companion. They have strange experiences which are brought about by magic.

The story of emigrants in New York, more precisely in poor part of Brooklyn, of Serb Baja and Spaniard Alfonso and their tragicomic efforts to fit so-called New World. Bajo works illegally by day, and by night helps Alfonso at the bar. He lives at Alfonso's place with a small rooster from Yugoslavia. The rooster's crowing at dawn awakens homesickness in Alfonso's blind moher, and Bajo's longing for his three children, taken care of by his mother, far away, somewhere on the Serbian-Montenegrian border, not realizing that they are already on their way for America. During that trip, Bajo's younger son loses his life in mythical river, Rio Grande. His older son fits new life conditions perfectly. Impractical ones, old mothers, middle-aged sons and lost love will vanish in unreal world of American illusions...
