After being offered a huge sum of money, four Thai guys go to Africa to investigate a region where a series of mysterious murders have been occurring. Complications arise when their travel bus has some mechanical problems, leaving them with no other choice than to go all the way on foot. On the way to their destination, in the wilds of Africa, they face plenty of problems such as a black stalker spirit, villager's ghost, a strange cannibal tribe and many other inexplicable spiritual phenomenons. Set in 1979 Pakistan, General Zia-ul-Haq has imposed martial law and, within a few months, the country is decreed a Muslim state. Aicha, a well-adjusted woman in her forties, devotes her life to the education of her eighteen-year-old son Salim, in the little village of Charkhi, in the Pakistani Penjab. Salim is a quiet dreamer, but the fast moving political situation fills Aicha with anxiety, since her son is changing out of all recognition. Barnaby and Troy investigate an apparent suicide that is just a tad too elaborate for them to accept at face value. The man had been under treatment for depression, his wife had recently divorced him and he owed money to a good many people. Barnaby's doubts are confirmed when the autopsy reveals the man was drugged. There are no end of suspects: the ex-wife, her soon to be new husband who also happens to be a dispensing chemist and the doctor and counselor who treated him at a nearby clinic. When other residents residents of Misomer Worthy are killed, the detectives must try to determine the common link among all of the victims.
