After the old-books shop closes, portraits of the Strumpet, Death, and the Devil come to life and amuse themselves by reading stories--about themselves, of course, in various guises and eras. Four of the stories are literary horror stories (one by Poe, one by R. L. Stevenson), and the last one is a comedy involving a fake haunting.

It is the year 1891 and a military doctor, Lieutenant Claude de Ross (Claudio Cassinelli) a survivor of not one, but two shipwrecks, washes ashore on a mysterious, uncharted Caribbean island along with a handful of convicts. When several of these convicts meet unfortunate ends at the hands of the titular fishmen, Claude and the other survivors flee into the jungle, only to encounter the sadistic Edmond Rackham (Richard Johnson) and his beautiful captive Amanda Marvin (Barbara Bach).
A struggling rock musician (Gregory) wants to get his career back on track, so he locks himself and his band in a recording studio overnight to come up with new music. In this process the group ends up sampling an old recording with an ominous voice hidden inside the track. A typical Nazi-era melodrama, The Comedians features a strong-willed female protagonist who refuses to live according to the rules of society. Naturally, such revolutionary behavior must be punished by death and the film's Karoline suffers the fate of so many heroines of the Third Reich. That this heavy-handed nonsense was directed by the same genius who gave the world Pandora's Box (1928) is nearly incomprehensible but, if nothing else, The Comedians offered employment for Henny Porten, a silent screen star otherwise more or less blacklisted by the regime. To her eternal credit, Porten delivers a finely tuned performance despite what must have been extremely difficult circumstances.
