The Last Desperate Hours benefits immensely from two great leading performances; chiefly Antonio Sabato in the lead role. Sabato fits his character like a glove and comes across excellently as the detestable sleazebag at the centre of the film. He gets great backup from Pier Paolo Capponi as the lead cop on the case. The atmosphere created by Giorgio Stegani is just great and he manages to create an impression of Milan that is as downtrodden and corrupt as the lead character. The film features the Spaghetti style that most genre fans will appreciate - the score by Gianni Marchetti is truly memorable. The plot flows quickly throughout and none of the ninety minute running time is wasted. The director ensures that we always know the central figure is on a deadline and he keeps things interesting by keeping up the cat and mouse game between cop and criminal, as well as implementing a good few murder scenes - one involving a medical saw is a particular highlight! It all boils down to a surprising, yet fitting ending and overall this crime flick is one of the best Eurocrime entries that I've seen and is well worth the trouble of tracking down! Rafo (Fabrizio Aguilar) is a would-be filmmaker in Lima struggling to pay his bills and support his girlfriend Laura (Mari Pili Barreda). He gets scammed by a Spanish con artist (Fernando Cayo) as part of an elaborate scheme involving several other Peruvians. The film is based on the corrupt administration of President Fujimori. Starting off as a bit of a hippy drippy affair with a young uninhibited couple using their bodies and their guile to get a free holiday, this turns into something much darker. There is real suspense including a splendid Hitchcockian scene in an aviary, lots of nudity and some pretty nasty moments. Irene Papas ( 'Zorba the Greek' and 'Don't Torture a Duckling') lends considerable gravitas with her impressive performance as the mature woman with something of a problem to sort out. Ray Lovelock is appealing as the handsome young man who likes fast cars and faster women but it is the lovely 16 year old Ornella Muti who is always catching the eye. Apparently the almost too perfect nude shots are of a body double but we still get plenty of up the shorts shots as she bends obligingly forward. All three are a great asset and with a decent script and Lenzi's constant inventiveness, this is a fine piece of exploitation cinema. An ex agent of the FBI and Interpol (Tony Lo Bianco) is expelled by the CIA and he starts a detective agency in Genoa, great Italian city. Here he is known as 'The American', despite his origins are Sicilian. Dr. Mayer entrusts him to investigate on the sequestration and murder of the shipowner Mayer, as well as of the recovery of a million of Liras poured for the not happened liberation of the dead one. 'The American' has to overcome a double barrier: commissioner Lo Bianco that fears the illegal methods and a violent gang headed by the gangster called 'The French'. 'The American' gets the friendship of Lo Bianco after manifold mishaps, showing to be still an excellent police officer. In the middle of the seventies Italy lived its darker season, because victim of the terrorism. Those were the so-called 'Anni di Piombo' (Leaden Years), so many Italian films reflect the fear that could be read in the eyes of Italians. This rare crime-cop movie is an explicit example of that climate. Excellent O.S.T. by Franco Micalizzi. French version (dubbed in Italian at bcult.it) is 95 minutes longer.
