This could almost be a documentary, it's depiction of the gay male lifestyle is so realistic. A brilliant film unlike any others in the genre. No fantasies here, just honesty (though obviously made before AIDS was an all-too common fear).
Going through the filmmography of Jess Franco is never an easy thing because not only do you have to go through more than 200 movies but you've also got to go through countless alternate versions. Sometimes films can have four or five alternate versions with newly shot scenes, alternate footage or footage thrown in from another director. In 1974 Franco made a film called EXORCISM, which was a very dark mix of sex, religion and violence. It was also released in a softer version under the title DEMONIAC and another version with XXX footage called SEXORCISMS. Then, in 1979, Franco took footage from EXORCISM and added a new plot around them and the end result is this film, THE SADIST OF NOTRE DAME.
A village mob is in pursuit of an arsonist. Fleeing from their hysteria, a seventeen year-old boy stumbles into a country house. He finds its owners, Jacques and Catherine, leading lives of monotony and habit. Jacques is a painter who divides his time between his canvasses and painting lessons he gives to the mentally ill in a nearby institution. Catherine is ill at ease in her arid, almost hostile surroundings, nurturing some unspecified dissatisfaction.

The Samrat of Suryadesh, Suryadev, travels to Pushpapuri in order to wed Rajkumari Nandini, but instead ends up getting married to her maid, Meenakshi, much to the chagrin of Nandini. Shortly thereafter a son, Vikramdev, is born to Meenakshi, and Nandini plots with a sorcerer, Mahendra, who turns Suryadev and Meenakshi into a pearl necklace, and a beggar respectively, while he takes on the guise of Suryadev himself, declares that Vikramdev and Meenakshi are dead, weds Nandini, and subsequently announces that they are parents of a daughter, Pallavi, who is actually his biological daughter from a previous marriage. Years later, Vikramdev surfaces, he was raised by elephants in the jungles, rescues Pallavi, who teaches him to read, speak, and write, both fall in love and get married. Then Vikramdev sets out to search for his biological parents, finds his mother, takes back his kingdom by exposing Mahendra and Nandini, while Nandini is killed, Mahendra is imprisoned. Then he and Pallavi set out to find a way to bring back Suryadev to life - not realizing that both their lives will be shattered when Vikramdev will age instantly and Pallavi will turn into stone.
