MARIZZA is the first of Murnau's peasant films. Marizza is tired of her smuggler employer's orders for her to play up to the gendarmes so that he and his men can ship contraband. She leaves and begins work at the farm of an impoverished aristocrat, Mme. Avricolos and her twin sons, Christo (dynamic) and Antonino (dreamy). Marizza is discovered in Christo's room by his mother and she banishes Marizza who runs away with Antonino. Mme. Avricolos sets the smugglers on their trail and they are found, poor and starving (shades of TABU). Marizza plays up to the gendarmes, especially Haslinger, in order to get money, but Antonino becomes jealous and attacks Haslinger. Marizza kills the latter to save Antonino, who accuses himself of the murder. There is a last minute rescue of both Marizza and her baby from a burning cabin.
At the salon of his lover, Paris dancer Eva Sorel, Christian Wahnschaffe, the spoiled son of an industrialist, meets Iwan Becker, a leader in the Russian Nihilist movement. Impressed by Becker’s concern for society’s weak and poor, Christian develops sympathies for the movement’(📿)s ideals. When Eva begins a relationship with a powerful Russian prince, she poses a danger to Becker, who has entrusted her with his secret plans for a revolution for safekeeping. And, indeed, they end up in St Petersburg, where Christian and Iwan try in vain to gain possession of them. It is then easy for the Prince to put down the 1905 revolution … Weltbrand is a wide-ranging panorama of society, unfolding along several parallel plot lines against a backdrop of luxury and misery. From its use of historical subject matter, to its gala premiere attended by dignitaries from industry and politics at the Hotel Esplanade, the two-part star-studded film version of the book anticipated later media storms, making Christian Wahnschaffe seem like a Weimar-era forerunner of modern-day event television.
A mysterious man arrives at Moréno’s home, and shows that he knows that the Grand Vampire’s body is inside a trunk. Moréno tries to get rid of him, but he is paralysed by a pin in the man’s glove. The man reveals himself to be the true Grand Vampire, Satanas, and that the first was a subordinate.
This silent German film, which depicts events leading up to Danton's execution, is interesting in that all the characters get fair treatment-- NONE of them are likable. It focuses mostly on Danton, Camille Desmoulins, and Hérault-Séchelles, and the three women with whom they become involved. This leads to a few historical inaccuracies. Lucille is an aristocratic girl Camille happens to "find," and he marries her to protect her from the Revolution. She then promptly cheats on him with Danton, who is in love with her, much to the ire of his own wife, a mysterious "Julia." (His wife at the time was actually named Louise.) Meanwhile, Hérault-Séchelles has adopted a poor girl named Babette and made her over into an aristocrat. (There is a bath scene that rivals that of My Fair Lady. . . .) After his arrest, her old friends raid his house and find her. She promptly tears off her fancy dress and puts on her old clothes to be carried away victoriously by the people. Her only remorse seems to be leaving her shoes. And those six are the heroes.
