Berri enjoys telling his stories so much that you feel embarrassed to point out that the material often is pretty thin. This tale of a young Jewish man trying to find his way in Paris in the 60's (will he follow his father into the fur business, or go into films?) is told with such brio, and the actors are encouraged to make the best of their gifts. Gregoire Aslan, for instance, is very funny here (and in Mazel Tov also), much more than in the routine comedies he cranked out for Hollywood. Berri plays himself with his usual hang-dog charm. Volker Schlöndorff transposes Bertolt Brecht’s late-expressionist work to latter-day 1969. Poet and anarchist Baal lives in an attic and reads his poems to cab drivers. At first feted and later rejected by bourgeois society, Baal roams through forests and along motorways, greedy for schnapps, cigarettes, women and men: ‘You have to let out the beast, let him out into the sunlight.’(🔬) After impregnating a young actress he soon comes to regard her as a millstone round his neck. Hoping to parlay the experience into a better life for himself, he eagerly prepares for his departure from his native land. Although an educated man, he has extreme difficulty finding work and an apartment. He sees racial inequity as blacks are relegated to manual labor while less skilled whites are given preferential treatment. A dinner with a liberal white friend even reveals a continuing attitude of colonization towards third world countries.
