Another amazing find from our friends at Cine-Clasico, "Vier um die Frau" is a 1921 Fritz Lang film found in the Brazilian film archives. The period intertitles are in Portuguese but the plot is not difficult to follow, particularly with the assistance of the invaluable Herr Graf Ferdinand Von Galitzien, whose blog entry on the film (link) follows : The film depicts, in three acts and an epilogue, the story of a clumsy clerk, Siegmund Lachmann (Ernst Lubitsch , who, after been fired for having broken accidentally the shop window where he works, goes to Berlin in order to get a new job in a prestigious fashion salon. Our hero finds himself surrounded by Teutonic beauties, that is to say, fat fräulein models that wear the latest fashions of the 1910's. Pretty soon he will be attracted to a young rich girl but with the opposition of her father. Based on Herman Bang's novel Mikael, Vingarne is a silent melodrama about an artist's love for his newfound male model. Radically, the film opens with director Stiller and his cinematographer coming across a sensual staue of Icarus in the gardens in Stockholm. Then the movie proper begins, with artist Claude Zoret struck by love at first sight for the young Mikael in a woodland; he adopts Mikael, who serves as inspiration for his latest sculpture. Inevitably Mikael gets his wings burnt when he starts courting Zoret's patron, the unscrupulous Lady Lucia; pained by Mikael's desertion, Zoret dies during a fierce storm before his staue of the naked boy.
