While attending an anniversary party at his superior officer's house, Lynley is given the task of investigating the death by car of a woman. He and Havers think it odd that he is given the case, but doggedly pursue the truth. The woman was the mother of a gifted violinist who mysteriously abandoned his concert just at the time his mother was run down. As the plot deepens, connections to a crime 20 years earlier appear and tensions between Lynley and a fellow policeman boil over.

In search of extra points, student Tadokoro (Nagaoka) joins the university’s erotic writing club, finding a somewhat lifeless gathering of five men around a table. The village of Kaminoe is an idyllic haven of flower filled meadows and tranquil wooded glades surrounded by majestic towering peaks. Once a year, on Mountain Day, the local community gather in the fields to pray to the god of the mountain, with the ranks of local boys dressed in white choirboy smocks delivering an al fresco version of The Hallelujah Chorus against the cherry-blossomed backdrop as the highpoint of the celebrations.
