Two couples live through attraction, distraction, sympathy, friendship, quarrel, jealousy, fidelity, and the Devil supervises it all by delivering solemn warnings in choice moments. This obscure movie tells about a man who has dedicated his life to look for the love, but the people around his world have totally tired him, including his woman. His life becomes a great mystery. Palmer and Antonia want to deal with the situation in a civilized way, by remaining friends with Martin. Meanwhile Martin tries to keep his mistress, Georgie Hands, a secret, but Palmer's sister, Honor Klein, who taught Georgie at Oxford, tells Palmer and Antonia about her. Furthermore, Honor introduces Georgie to Martin's womanizing brother, Alexander. This is just the beginning of the various liaisons. Excused by commerce from the need to be serious, Skolimowski gives free rein to his fantasy in a careering period charade which makes amiable mockery of military glory. McEnery is perfect as Conan Doyle's dashing French hussar, prancing through Napoleon's Peninsular campaign with one hand on hip and the other courting disasters averted only by his sublime insouciance. Not all the gags work, but enough do to make this something of a welcome - and exquisitely photographed - treat.
